With the current economic downturn, more and more parents simply cannot afford to throw lavish parties for their children. Let’s face it, every child wants to have a party for their birthday and would be very disappointed if they didn’t get one.
Hiring venues, party planners and entertainers can be extremely costly , which is why many parents are deciding to throw parties at home and sorting out their own entertainment.
Here are some ideas and tips on how to arrange your own DIY party and save money:
Party Location:
If your house or flat is big enough, bite the bullet and have it at home. Yes there will be clearing up to do afterwards, but weigh this up against the price of hiring a venue. If you feel there is not sufficient space at home, then perhaps you could ask a friend or relative if you can use their house or failing that consider hiring a venue that would be fairly reasonable such as a church hall or local community centre.
In the spring and summer months have the party outside in the garden, or if you don’t have a garden arrange to have it in a local park.
Party Entertainment:
There are lots of games you can organise and most good party websites will provide lots of party game ideas in addition to the more classic games like Pass the Parcel and Musical Statues.
Get crafty – most children love to create something that they can take home with them and it saves on having to arrange party bags. There are lots of ideas which can be found on crafty websites.
Family and friends can help out and perhaps organise face painting, manicures or tattoos.
Kids only need to be entertained for an hour or so and the rest of time is spent eating party food.
Party Food:
Prepare a menu beforehand that would be suitable for all children. Keep it simple and not too varied as children tend to eat little at parties as they are so excited. Fingers foods such as finger sandwiches, vegetable sticks, fruit, fairy cakes always work best.
Decorations and Party Bags:
Look out for party packs or kits where you can save money rather than buying items individually.
You don’t need to go overboard with decorations and in fact too many balloons just end up popping and making some children upset.
Be creative and make decorations yourself. A few paper chains scattered around look great or invest in fabric bunting that can be used over and over again. In fact most decorations, even plastic and paper ones can be stored away and re-used again.
In terms of party bags, every child will expect one and will be the last thing they remember from the party. There are lots of ready filled party bags available suitable for all budgets, but if you prefer not to buy them, you can make them yourself. It just requires times and a bit of imagination.
The most important thing when organising your own party is to allow sufficient time to plan it all out properly and set a budget.
Most children, especially under the age of ten will be more than happy with a DIY party, as long as they can celebrate with their friends and be made to feel extra special on their big day.
